Definition of Terms

Forest Land is defined as being at least 16.7% stocked by forest trees of any size, or formerly having had such tree cover, and not currently developed for nonforest use.

Nonforest Land is defined as land that has never supported forests and land formerly forested where timber production is precluded by development for other uses.

Timberland is defined as being at least 16.7% stocked by forest trees of any size, or formerly having had such tree cover, not currently developed for nonforest use, capable of producing 20 cubic feet of industrial wood per acre per year, and not withdrawn from timber utilization by legislative action.

Reserved Timberland is defined as forest land sufficiently productive to qualify as timberland, but is withdrawn from timber utilization through statute or administrative designation.

Miscellaneous Federal Land is defined as being Federal land other than national forests, land administered by the Bureau of Land Management, and land administered by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Other Private Land is defined as privately-owned land, excluding forest industry land or forest industry-related land. It is also referred to as nonindustrial private forest (NIPF) land.
